Newsgroups, Grupos de noticias, Nieuwsgroepen, Groupes de discussion

We were reviewing some of the comments on our last blog post Newsgroups vs. Usenet and we were reminded of a question we've been asking ourselves for the last 3 months or so….

"What do people who speak languages other than English use to reference Usenet related terms?"

Listed below is a breakdown of several popular Usenet related terms and the terms provided by our translation company. Are these accurate? Do you just use the English version? Feel free to comment with your thoughts….

Newsgroup
French – groupe de discussion
German – newsgroup
Dutch – nieuwsgroep
Spanish – grupo de noticias

Newsgroups
French – groupes de discussion
German – newsgroups
Dutch – nieuwsgroepen
Spanish – grupos de noticias

News Server
French – serveur de nouvelles
German – nachrichten server
Dutch – nieuwsserver
Spanish – servidor de noticias

I've never ever seen or thought of "nachrichten server" as german word for news server. It's just the english one.

Server is used identically, whereas the german word "Nachrichten" refers more to breaking news as on CNN.

Newsgroups
Italian - gruppi di discussione

News Server
Italian - servizio di notizie

Anyway in Italy usually we use the English version.

As someone born and raised in french Canada, and working all day long in english, I end up using some words from both languages when talking to my co-workers.

Newsgroups: I use this word in both english and french.

News Server: I use "serveur de news" in french.

I also use Usenet in both french and english, and you will never catch me calling an email a "courriel" in french. That plain sucks!

Isn't 'newsgroup' French for Bulletin Bord?

In Danish we call it Nyhedsgrupper,
but most of the time we just say usenet.

Nope, we call Bboards : Forums
Newsgroups stands for : "Groupe de News", which actually noone uses, because it's really much faster and more simple to say Newsgroups.

in german news server would be

Nachrichtenserver

One word and always first letter uppercase.

But everyone in Germany uses the english word: news server. So no need to translate it. Most IT-Vocabular isn't translated in german language and I'm glad about it. Of course there is always a translation but it isn't used. If the english word is modified a bit, we call it "denglisch".

I confirm, here in France we use either "newsgroups" or "groupes de discussion" but never "serveur de nouvelles". We're simply using "serveur de news".

Here in the Netherlands I often hear just "newsserver" for, well, newsserver :)

There aren't many people who call it a "nieuwsserver", although that's the correct Dutch word for it.

Strange thing, though, that we call the newsgroup themselves by the Dutch word for them - "nieuwsgroepen".

Ah well... languages are quite dynamic and this is some proof of it :)

Here in the Netherlands we barely use "nieuwsserver" for newsserver, we just use the English word. As with many computer terms, we just use the English word.

On the other side, newsgroups are almost always referred to as such - no translation. Probably because newsserver sounds almost Dutch, whereas the word newsgroups doesn't.

Giganews needs help. I've been begging like a dog for 2 days just to get them so send me the user id and password to get with the account I paid for. Not a single response. Now I have to go thru the hassle of cancelling the charge and spending the rest of my life telling people how bad their customer service is.
